Dr. Tony Rose’s Week at Optimum Health Institute (OHI)

Getting away from the practice to “renew” your mind, body and spirit is important. Below you’ll find a first-person account, written by Dr. Rose, about his recent trip to the Optimum Health Institute with college and friend, Dr. Mark Silberg.

“Dr. Karl (Tony) Rose (me, but not seen below), and his friend and colleague, Dr. Mark Silberg – the two of them trained together receiving their specialty certification at the University of Pennsylvania for the practice of Periodontics – flew to San Diego, CA. We attended a week-long course/program at the Optimum Health Institute in Lemon Grove, CA. The mission of OHI is to:

  • Inspire and motivate you to make healthy choices in life
  • Explore physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being
  • Integrate helpful tools and teachings in your daily life
  • Enable transformation so that you can achieve optimum health.

At the Optimum Health Institute, we learned and practiced how to create optimal health for one’s body, mind and spirit. This included a strong focus on dietary health.

The program consisted of various activities from 6:00 am to 8:30 pm each day, for six days. The activities included lectures as well as scheduled activities. The lectures were well produced and presented about achieving body/mind/spiritual health. Scientific references and anecdotal accounts about the provided information and demonstrations were provided as a part of the curriculum. Additionally, the staff addressed the issues and offered solutions about, how to maintain any behavioral shifts that were undertaken and initiated via the week’s work.

The one week long program includes exercise, meditation, spiritual endeavors, personal growth, GI Tract detoxification, “Juice Fasting”, the preparation of healthy food for consumption, various physical/body conditioning processes (e.g. yoga, detoxification procedures, rest/sleep training and more), grief/mourning and anger management sessions. Two, one-hour exercise periods per day, meditation and spiritual times that are scheduled for every day, are part of the program, yet not mandatory.

Group seminars, addressing Spiritual/Emotional/Personal Awareness/Behavioral/Relationships issues, and more, were held by the center every day. The sessions, which were voluntary, ranged from ten to forty attending people at any time.

What you eat and drink and how you eat and drink are a major focus of “OHI’s” program. Eating Raw Vegan food (not heated over 105o F), with nothing but natural food flavorings, low glycemic indices, and low salt content is at its core.

Also, consuming the dietary program employs GI Tract detoxification methods, including multiple times a day drinking Wheat Grass Juice.

Meditation and rest times could occur in one’s room, or anywhere in a number of areas specifically created for those purposes.

Many hours were made available for rest, relaxation, conversational exchange and socialization.

The week re-sensitized us to the positive impact of balancing our hectic, accomplishment-focused lives, with inner peace, being positively spiritual, eating well and working to maintain our bodies in their best possible condition, and embracing others in our lives.”
