Our Aesthetic Gum Procedures
Gum contouring and gum grafting are simple but often necessary in-office procedures. Both procedures restore your smile and/or protect the roots of your teeth. Let’s explain a little more about each of these procedures.
Gum Contouring
Gum contouring reshapes or resculpts your gumline. If you feel your smile is too “gummy,” we can perform this simple surgical procedure to remove excess gum and reshape your gum line. The end result is perfectly shaped gums that show more teeth for a beautiful natural smile.
Gum contouring is often done for cosmetic purposes. However, a dentist can also use it to repair tissue damage. In either case, we will administer local anesthesia before the procedure. It will numb your gums so you won’t feel pain while the doctor works on your mouth.
Gum Grafting
Over time your gums may recede or wear away for a variety of reasons. Some of these reasons include brushing too hard, gum disease, hormonal changes, or genetics. Exposed tooth roots can be the result, making those areas sensitive to hot and cold temperatures and sweets. The exposed roots are also soft and more prone to decay. Fortunately, gum grafting can fix this problem by covering these areas with soft tissue grafts. The gum graft eliminates or significantly reduces the sensitivity and protects the tooth.
For some, the recession and exposed roots can be seen easily in the area of a person’s smile. This may prevent a person from wanting to smile and affect their self-confidence. Cosmetic gum grafting can correct long-appearing teeth. Gum grafting can enhance the smile while protecting the teeth.
The result of either gum contouring or gum grafting is a glowing smile and periodontal health.
