Gum Whitening

Discolored gums can impact the overall aesthetic of your smile and decrease your confidence. If you’re reluctant to show off your smile because of your gums, have you considered gum whitening, also known as gum bleaching?

What is gum whitening (gum bleaching) treatment?

There are several steps you can take yourself to both protect your teeth and gums and enhance your smile. But sometimes, no matter how hard you try and how much time you devote to oral hygiene, there’s nothing you can do to address certain imperfections. Some people have discolored, patchy gums, which both detract from the beauty of their smile and impact their self-esteem. If you hide your smile due to dark gums whenever there’s a camera around, there is a solution. Gum whitening/gum bleaching is an excellent example of how cosmetic dentistry can enhance aesthetics, but also boost confidence. This treatment is designed to alter the look of the gums to create a more aesthetically pleasing overall smile.

What is gum whitening treatment?

There are multiple reasons why you may have dark, bright red or patchy gums. Discoloration can result from:

  • Neglect and poor oral hygiene: Brushing your teeth twice daily and cleaning the gum line and the cracks between the teeth are the best ways to improve dental health, reduce the risk of infection and inflammation and prevent staining. If you have neglected your gum health, they may not have the appearance you’re looking for.
  • Ethnicity: Some people are more likely to have darker, or patchy, gums than others due to their ethnicity.
  • Lifestyle habits: In some cases, lifestyle habits, for example, smoking or chewing tobacco can elevate the risk of discolored gums.
  • Medication: Some types of drugs have been linked to discoloration of the gums. Gum whitening/gum bleaching can help to target patches of red or darker gum tissue, but discoloration may recur if you continue taking the same medicines after treatment.

What does the procedure involve?

Gum whitening is a precision treatment, which involves using advanced laser technology to even out the color of your gums. The lasers react with moisture in the mouth to target patches of discolored tissue, creating a more uniform and attractive aesthetic.

Laser gum whitening treatment offers a host of benefits, including:

  • Minimally-invasive
  • Very little discomfort
  • Short recovery time
  • Extremely safe
  • Immediate results

When you come to us for gum whitening, the first step will be a consultation. The consultation enables Dr. Rinaldi to take a close look at your gums and to determine whether or not this procedure is suitable for you. If you are a good candidate, Dr. Rinaldi will explain how the process works and we will be able to answer questions you may have.

When you have treatment, your gums will be numbed using a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort. The laser will be directed at your gums, targeting discolored areas to eliminate dark and uneven patches. Usually, treatment is completed within 30-60 minutes and you should then be able to get back to the rest of your day. It is normal to experience mild sensitivity after treatment. We understand that some patients are anxious about undergoing dental treatment. If you’re worried about discomfort, we can use a stronger anesthetic. Dr. Rinaldi will discuss your personal requirements and preferences during the planning stage.
