Procedures Involved in Full Mouth Reconstruction

Woman gets full mouth reconstruction.

Full mouth reconstruction involves a number of different procedures to help you achieve the perfect smile. The exact treatments that are incorporated will depend on the current condition of your teeth, as well as your hopes and expectations for the treatment. With that in mind, we are going to take a look at some of the different treatments in a full mouth reconstruction to get a better understanding of what may be involved.

Dental Implants

Let’s begin with dental implants. Dental implants are basically replacement tooth roots. They supply a strong and stable foundation for removable or permanent replacement teeth, which are created to match your natural teeth.

There are a number of benefits that are associated with dental implants. This includes improved oral health and self-esteem, as well as easier eating. Dental implants function just like your own teeth, enabling you to eat your favorite foods without pain and with confidence. The benefits do not end there either. You can also expect improved comfort, improved speech, and improved appearance.

Full Set Dentures

Some people prefer to have a full set of dentures rather than having dental implants. If you are unsure about this full mouth reconstruction option, we can advise you on the best option for you based on the current condition of your teeth.

So, what are dentures? Dentures are false teeth that can be removed. They fit over your gums snugly, replacing any missing teeth and eradicating potential issues caused by gaps.

When people hear the words ‘false teeth,’ they may think less favorably about them. However, dental technology has advanced considerably over the years, and the dentures available today look just like natural teeth. They appear so realistic that people will not be able to tell the difference.

Dental Bridges

If you have missing teeth, a dental bridge may be recommended. This is a false tooth that is held in place by the abutment teeth on either side of the gap.

There are four different types of dental bridges. Traditional dental bridges consist of false teeth or a false tooth that is held in the right place with a dental crown. The dental bridge is cemented onto each of the abutment teeth. There are also implant-supported dental bridges. Your dentist will be able to recommend the best type of dental bridge for your needs.

There are many different reasons why a dental bridge may be recommended for you, including the following:

  • Prevent your remaining teeth from moving out of the correct position
  • Re-adjust your bite to correctly distribute the force while chewing
  • Maintain the shape of your face
  • Restore your pronunciation and speech
  • Improve your ability to chew correctly
  • Restore your smile

Dental Crowns

Another type of treatment that may be included in your full mouth reconstruction is a dental crown. This is a cap that is in the shape of a tooth, which will be placed over the top of your existing tooth to restore the size and shape, as well as improve the appearance of it.

There are a number of different reasons why you may need dental crowns. This includes making a cosmetic modification, to cover a dental implant, to cover severely discolored or misshapen teeth, or to hold a dental bridge in place.

Dental crowns can also be used to support and cover a tooth with a big filling when there is not much of the tooth left or to restore a tooth that has been severely worn down or is already broken. Dental crowns are also effective in protecting teeth that are weak.

Inlays and Onlays

Depending on the extent of tooth damage a tooth may need an inlay or onlay to save it from extraction. This is a type of full mouth reconstruction because there may be more than one tooth that needs this procedure.

Let’s start with inlays, which replaces a removed cavity inside the cusp of a tooth, specifically the molars or premolars. It is sealed in place to give the tooth strength and is often made to blend in with the rest of the tooth.

An onlay is similar to an inlay, except that it is used to cover at least one cusp as well as the inside of the tooth. An onlay is used when there is more extensive tooth damage due to decay or injury. The onlay should restore the tooth to proper function and save the tooth.

Root Canal

The final treatment that we are going to take a look at is root canal treatment, which is also known as endodontics. This is a type of dental treatment that is used for treating infections that are in the middle of a tooth. This treatment can end up saving a tooth that may have needed to be removed.

This treatment is needed when there is an infection at the root canal, which is the center of the tooth. This can be caused by bacteria that live in the mouth and invades the tooth. This can be as a result of damage to your teeth that has happened because of a trauma, a leaky filling, or tooth decay.

During your consultation, your dentist will assess your teeth to determine whether or not root canal treatment is required. Signs that you have a pulp infection that requires this treatment includes a loose tooth, pain when chewing or biting, and pain when drinking or eating cold or hot drink or food.
